Brown Sign: Roosevelt Island, Rosslyn, VA

IMG_2601Quiz time.  Can anyone guide me to the monument to Theodore Roosevelt in Washington,  D.C.?  You can probably name, and find, at least the Lincoln, Washington, and Jefferson monuments, with extra credit for George Mason.  Maybe the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Memorials, with extra credit for the WWI Veterans from D.C.  But, few may realize that Theodore Roosevelt has a whole island in the Potomac River set aside for him.  Granted, you have to go to Virginia to cross a foot bridge over to the island, and the natural landscape for which Teddy Roosevelt was famous surrounds his monument, so you cannot actually see it until you come around a curving path, up a slope.  But, if you take the time to walk there, you will enter the stone plaza with fountains and bridges, his statue and monoliths engraved with his pithy sayings.NATURE

IMG_2602I do delight the hardy life of the open.

There are no words that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness, that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy and its charm.

The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation, increased and not impaired in value.

Conservation means development as much as it does protection.

IMG_2603A man’s usefulness depends upon his living up to his ideals is so far as he can.

It is hard to fail but it is worse to never have tried to succeed.

All daring and courage, all iron endurance of misfortune, make for a finer and nobler type of manhood.

Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die, and non are fit to die who have shrunk from the joy of life and the duty of life.

IMG_2604I want to see you game boys.  I want to see you brave and manly.  And, I also want to see you gentle and tender.

Be practical as well as generous in your ideals.  Keep your eyes on the stars, but remember to keep your feet on the ground.

Courage, hard work, self mastery, and intelligent effort are the essential to successful life.

Alike for the national and the individual, the one indispensable requisite is character.

IMG_2605Ours is a government of liberty, by, through, and under law.

A great democracy has got to be progressive or it will soon cease to be great or a democracy.

Order without liberty, and liberty without order are equally destructive.

In popular government, results worth having can be achieved only be men who combine worthy ideals with practical good sense.

If I must choose between righteousness and peace, I choose righteousness.

About hermitsdoor

Up here in the mountains, we have a saying, "You can't get there from here", which really means "We wouldn't go the trouble to do that". Another concept is that "If you don't know, we ain't telling." For the rest, you'll have to read between the lines.

I’ve never visited this site, but it sounds wonderful. I am particularly interested in the quotations, many of which I wish our politicians today would read and take to heart.

I am afraid that many of our politicians are more versed in ideology than ideals these days. We saw a play about Paul Robeson last night (review to follow, of course). In one scene the young Paul is sitting at the dinning room table with his father, learning Greek in order to read the Iliad and Odyssey. My mind wandered to how many of our leaders (politics and culture) even know about the classics, let alone the lessons contained in them. Then I recalled that T. Cruz, in his recent filabuster read, not from Plutarch’s Lives, but from Dr. Seuss (nothing against Green Eggs and Ham, but these are lessons for a different age group). Yes, I imagine that most people who wandered upon the Roosevelt Memorial miss the quotes.

Huh, I have not been to the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial and didn’t even know it existed. It sounds like a destination worth finding. The FDR Memorial is easier becasue it contains the closest restroom to the Lincoln Memorial.

I’m with Barney, this memorial should be a required visit for all politicians on Capitol Hill.
