Brown Sign: Iwo Jima Memorial, Washington, D.C.

IMG_2472We are back in Washington, D.C. for a family event.  Our hotel this time was just blocks from the Iwo Jima Memorial next to Arlington Cemetary.  Though the winter cold snaps have been keeping the temperatures in the teens, we still got our for our sunrise solitude walks around mounments that are usually teaming with tourists.  The first morning, we walked over a freeze covering of snow to the Iwo Jima Memorial.  The camera protested after only two photos, closed it’s lense and would not offer any more battery power.  With recharged batteries, we returned the next day.  The stiff breeze and wind-chill was gone, allowing my fingers to operate the camera for a little longer.

About hermitsdoor

Up here in the mountains, we have a saying, "You can't get there from here", which really means "We wouldn't go the trouble to do that". Another concept is that "If you don't know, we ain't telling." For the rest, you'll have to read between the lines.

It’s a very touching memorial. Love the detail of the hands.

We were contemplating the craft of the sculpture, specialically regarding the hands of the marines. Given that these are many times life-size, they demand extreme attention to details and texture. Thanks for noticing.

  2. Great shots – the last one of the silhouette against the setting sun is wonderful.

    • hermitsdoor says:

Timing, timing, timing to be on the correct side of the monument at that moment. Because we had walked out the day before, though the battery shut down after a couple of shots, I had the location in mind already. Thanks to the clouds and sun cooperating that second morning.

  3. Laurie says:

I enjoyed your photos, Oscar. Glad that you were able to return to get them.

Those two mornings were the one when the sun and clouds were in the right position. We also awake much earlier than the rest of our family, so we tend to get a walk in at sunrise, before they are ready for the day.
