Brown Sign: Mor’ o’ Morro Bay

If you could distribute your relatives about, you should have one living in one of the world’s urban spaces, one with a place in the mountains, one in some exotic, foreign destination, and one in a quaint beach town.  For the later, we have a cousin just blocks from the beach in Morro Bay.  Guess what!?  This happens to be just a few villages south of the Big Sur region, through which we traveled recently.  Company coming!

Morro Bay is a quiet beach community in the off-season.  It is a bit far for the LA beach comers to scout out during the workweek.  And, from what we are told, many of the visitors come from the Fresno and Bakersfield areas of the Central Valley to escape the summer heat and labor.  Do not expect to find the rich and famous, sporting skimpy beach attire and bad behavior.

The neighborhoods have a lived in feel.  Homes range from bungalows, to ranch homes, to fashionably landscaped vacation homes with views.  Few are taller than two stories.  Many opt out of the second level, but have viewing platforms, which are just tall enough to enjoy a peak at the water a half mile or so away.  Accessing the beach is an easy stroll away, once you cross Highway 1.

Our time was devoted more to family visits than to formal touring.  However, we did take some walks along the surf and drives, to view the sunset our first evening, and to the waterfront the next day.  The beach stretches north from Morro Rock for about half a dozen miles.  That is probably enough sand and shells to keep joggers and beach combers content.  The waterfront ranges, from working fishing docks, to seafood restaurants, which host sea loins barking from the rocks just below.  Nearby are streets with brightly colored shops awaiting the souvenirs hunter.  The southern end of the waterfront hosts a golf course, marina, and natural history museum.  With so much left undone, I guess our relatives will just have to put up with us in the future… some time after they get finished with their Virgin Diet...
