Charitable Count: March

March is the month for the South Branch Ham, Bacon, and Egg Sale, of which I wrote last year.  This is as much about charity, as about community.  But, then again, maybe those two words should be connected.  As a brief review, the Ham, Bacon, and Egg Sale is an annual fund raising auction hosted by the FFA and 4-H students of Hardy, Grant, and Pendelton counties.  The students, mostly in high school, raise hogs, have them slaughtered, butcher them, then cure and smoke the hams and bacons.  The local businesses and individuals who bid on these products know that they are paying above market value.  The students receive the money at the end of the year, less a percentage that supports their chapter of the FFA or 4-H.  This money can be saved for college, used to purchase livestock and pay for feed, become a down payment on farm equipment, etc.  While many of the following organizations have noble missions and programs, if we are charitable to those afar while neglecting our own neighbors, have we left “community” out of charity?

To whom have do you offer a hand of assistance, and actually can touch the person?

About hermitsdoor

Up here in the mountains, we have a saying, "You can't get there from here", which really means "We wouldn't go the trouble to do that". Another concept is that "If you don't know, we ain't telling." For the rest, you'll have to read between the lines.

Wow, that’s quite a lengthy list, Oscar. I have a few of them on my list as well.

Love the fact that you are all about community and charity. That’s fantastic my friend.

All those mailings can becoming mind numbing, to the point that we do not even notice how many come in. I am appeasing my curiosity, and maybe yours vicariously, though this exercise.

I find writing a check to some distant fund appeases my guilt about injustice in our world. Giving a hand to a neighbor has more effect on my life and a great sense of gratitude. I had not timed it for Passover/Easter, but not a bad meditation for the season.

      Thanks for stopping by.
